Arty weekend

I'm so glad to be doing a post which is not related to the food we had on weekends.For a change we went to Poompuhar and the Dastkari haat.It was eye candy indeed.

The handicrafts development corporation of the Government of Tamil Nadu known as Poompuhar have an array of traditional brass lamps,tanjore paintings and rare bronze icons and much more.Worth a visit.

 We picked up a brass icon of Sai baba from here.

The Dastkari Haat@kalakshetra was another interesting craft, calligraphy, textiles and arts festival.We picked up Panch dathu bells and patachitra bottle craft.This was a fun evening.

Really glad to be informing to all my readers that, Aarohi Singh is holding an exhibition of her hand painted products in Bangalore.I simply love her desi kitsch theme.Do check out her Nimboo-Mirchi series of paintings,kettles,baltis,thalis,chairs,trunks and boxes .Wish I could visit Bangalore to pick up one of her creations. The venue and the date is printed on the image above.

Shake it with Salt and Peppa!

A girl cut in two! I couldn't help thinking of this French movie title, when I received this orange salt and pepper shaker as a gift.I think this was picked up in the U.S.This is going to the salt and pepper carnival happening at Scatter the batter. 

“It's the cook's nook’

This is a nook in my kitchen,which I have converted as a sanctified space!.Thanx to the lack of space in my "in transit" kitchen.When the key bunch people announced their party I thought it would be a no show from my side.Finally I persuaded myself to feature this nook.The lamps are facing the east.The Ganesh lamp is a panchaloham lamp(an alloy of five metals).The wooden stand is actually a  thai wooden game piece!The red and yellow terracota lamps are magic lamps.If  you turn this lamp upside down,there is a hole in the centre.You can pour the oil in there and use it as a regular lamp.The oil will not spill out!

Flower Power

The Butterfly pea is my all time favorite flower. I have captured these leggy lasses blooming in the pot in our balcony.  They are so sturdy and they yield beautiful flowers.Happy Anniversary to the key bunch people.This is my submission to their Say it with flowers carnival. Marapachi Bommai drying in the sun.I have come to like these traditional toys,which are ecofriendly and have medicinal properties. They make good decorative pieces and are kept in "golu" during navaratri.

FLAMES

These are a pair of hurricane lamps in disuse at my grand dads.It served to light up my ancestral home for so many years providing light for all of us.All things come to pass.I feel sad at their current state.

She dwelt among the untrodden ways

This flower is called the butterfly pea or Shanka Pushpam in Tamil.Simply love the blue petal with a white throat.The Lord of Saturn loves to be adorned with this flower.This is my favourite flower."A violet by a mossy stone half hidden from the eye"..Wordsworth you rock.

Orissa handicrafts Mela

This evening I visited the Orissa Handicrafts fair at Anna Nagar.I was happy with the wares displayed and picked up a couple of things.I loved the magic lamp,this earthen lamp has a hole behind and if you pour water inside,it does not flow back because of the secret chamber. I shall post a picture of the magic lamp.Above is the collage of the magic lamp,terracotta scrubbers,Kashmiri hand embroided kurta and a patachitra.

Chennai Power Outage
