Weekend Exploits and a Movie

It was pouring in Chennai, I skipped lunch, see how I made up instead. I had brown bread with grilled Italian vegetables and balsamic vinegar. A black currant mousse cake and hot chocolate. The sandwich, was the best of the lot.I didn't like the Hot chocolate though. So for a quick bite head out to the French Loaf Anna Nagar. The place is quite cozy .

Later that night I watched a true Russian movie called The Italian(2005) directed by Andrei Kravchuk. The story is about illegal adoption in Russia, and a child's quest to find his birth mother. Vanya is the name of the boy who dares all odds to finally find his mother. He even learns how to read to achieve his mission. I really loved the locales in and around the orphanage. Do check it out if you want a break from commercial cinema.

Valampuri Vinayagar Temple Visit

Posted by Picasa
My mom is a big fan of Valampuri Vinayagar. The speciality of this deity is the curvature of the trunk. His cute trunk is curved towards the right side.Hence the name Valampuri. This is no ordinary Ganesh. He is a very rare find and doubly auspicious. He represents the sun and is masculine. The left trunked Ganesh is feminine and represents the moon.
Valampuri Ganesh represents renunciation, moksha and all that is honest and austere. He represents Pingala Nadi,a channel through which the energy of the subtle body flows. He also represents motion and energy. This temple is situated in Anna Nagar O block, hence it warranted our visit. The other deities in the temple are Goddess Durga,Lord Hanuman,Lord Ayyappan,Lord Murugan and his consorts and Dakshinamurthy.Such is the greatness of this Ganesh,I really hope that he uses his trunk to turn and churn my obstacles away!!.By the way my favourite sweet is Modak,I always crave for this delicacy..I know you do too...Lord Vignesh.

10 Dec 2008 Goddess MaaKali Temple Visit

Peepal tree at the temple

On Lord Shiva's special day (a day most suited for propitiating him-pradosham), I visited a temple dedicated to the Goddess MaaKali, it also houses a spatika(quartz) Lingam. This is located in Anna Nagar 4th Main road chennai. Every temple houses a Sthala Vriksham(a temple tree). Being a tree hugger I just love the concept of temple tree! "Hindus associate the tree with the three gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Vishnu being reputed to have been born under a Peepul, which is therefore Vishnu himself in the form of a tree."Women tie a yellow thread around the bark of the tree for their wishes to be fulfilled. The message of conservation has beautifully been woven in to this milieu. This temple also houses a Peepal tree(Sacred Fig)( Ficus religiosa). It is called Arasa Maram in tamil.Women generally go around the tree to worship it. Again it proves to be very beneficial because of the copious supply of oxygen. It is such a mood uplifter and a good form of exercise. What a beautiful metaphor. Buddha also attained enlightenment under the peepal tree.
